Focus of the Month: Christmas Carols
“And in the same region there were shepherds out in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with great fear. And the angel said to them, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.” (Luke 2:10-11)
It is almost impossible for me to believe I will celebrate my 50th Christmas morning this year. As I reflect upon Christmases past, so many memories flood my mind. Years when I was too young to really understand the true meaning of this wondrous season, years when I didn’t pay attention to the true meaning, and now embarking on the sweetest years since I began loving Jesus. I wake up knowing that I have the most beautiful gift a girl could ask for – a loving Savior who will love me for me. I repeat love me, for me.
How many times have we tried to earn the attention or love of another? How often have we wondered if we bring enough to the table? Do we have enough to offer? The answer came on that first Christmas day. I am enough. God sent His only son into our world because of His great love for us.
The Christmas Carol I share today is “The Little Drummer Boy”. Even though this little boy isn’t mentioned in Scripture, I often wondered what it would have been like to step foot in that manger on that Glorious night. Would I have been bold enough? Bold enough to go before the infant King? Bearing no gift – but me? This little drummer boy sang,
“I have no gift to bring pa rum pum pum pum;
That’s fit to give a King, pa rum pum pum pum
Shall I play for you? Pa rum pum pum
On my drum…”
And then he played; he played his best for Him on that drum. My favorite part of this carol is when we sing “Then He smiled at me, Pa rum pum pum pum.” Jesus smiled at him! He smiles at you also. You see, when we come to Him with just ourselves, the way we are is enough. There is no need for the haunting thoughts of needing to be better before we come. Our part is simply coming to Him; the changes that take place in us are because of our love for Him. Have you come to Him? Are you waiting for the right moment, the right gift? You are already that gift. And when you come, you will be met with a smile that will change your life for eternity.
