Majesty & Might

O Lord God of hosts,
Who is mighty like You, O Lord?
Your faithfulness also surrounds You.
Psalm 89:8 (NKJV)

Series: His Name is Jesus

When difficult times arise, or circumstances seem too challenging to face, it may not feel natural to look outside yourself for answers. It’s especially tough if you have always leaned on your own ability or understanding to get through them. Having been a person who definitely tried to control outcomes that weren’t favorable to me, I can say with complete confidence that this didn’t bode well very often. Before trusting in Jesus as my personal Savior, I trusted mainly in myself to fix or solve any problems I encountered. This caused countless hours of worry, fear, and many sleepless nights. But Jesus rescued me from all of this.

By spending time in God’s Word, I not only learned “about” Jesus, but experienced the enormity of who He is. I feel Him with me in times of trouble, in times of joy, in the valleys, and on the mountaintops. This week we are focusing upon the majesty and might of Jesus. He is our Almighty God. The Mighty One who saves. And yes, He came to save you. Once we grasp the extent of His ability, we will more readily pause and remind ourselves that He is bigger than anything we may face today.

Do you know Jesus? It is not possible to trust someone we don’t know. Calling upon Jesus will be your first defense once you have an accurate understanding of who He is. His provision is perfect. He provided a solution to all of your needs when He went to the cross. Jesus provides a shield around your thinking, and His presence heals your loneliness. In Luke 1:37 (NKJV) the angel Gabriel said this to Mary after announcing she would conceive and bear a son, even though she was a virgin:

For with God nothing will be impossible.

Mary gave birth to our Savior, who was fully God and fully man. His name is Almighty God. His provision was with her in every moment. With Jesus as our Mighty God, nothing in our lives is too hard for Him either. He is the same God now, as He was then. His power is still working in and through His people today. Think of a time He carried you through something insurmountable. Did it strengthen your faith? Reinforce your assurance of His ability? Restore your hope?

The Old Testament books are full of God’s power at work. Just as He rescued His people time and time again from despair and captivity, He continues to provide, protect, and defend those whom He has called for His purpose. Let’s look at a couple passages together.

Psalm 147:4-5 (ESV) proclaims:

He determines the number of the stars; He gives to all of them their names. Great is our Lord, and abundant in power; His understanding is beyond measure.

In Jeremiah 32:17-18 it is written:

‘Oh, Lord God! Behold, You Yourself have made the heavens and the earth by Your great power and by Your outstretched arm! Nothing is too difficult for You, who shows mercy to thousands, but repays the wrongdoing of fathers into the laps of their children after them, great and mighty God. The Lord of armies is His name;

Almighty God, our Creator, is able to accomplish more than we ask or imagine. Because He carries out His purpose for our lives, we do not need to lose heart. But do we make room for His transforming power, or do we have too small a view of His power? Let’s look at a few ways understanding the mighty power of our Triune God is so crucial:

  • When we are face impossible circumstances, illness, or loss, human strength often falls short. Understanding that the Creator of the universe holds all power reminds us that nothing is too difficult for Him. This realization shifts our focus from the size of the problem to the greatness of God, allowing for peace and rest.
  • Knowing that God is “Almighty” means that He has both the authority and the ability to fulfill His purposes. It gives believers the assurance that His redemptive plans, promises of grace, and principles of justice are unbreakable and will come to pass, regardless of shifting worldly powers or circumstances.
  • During times of suffering or confusion, the idea of a powerful God offers great comfort. It brings the comforting realization that all things are ultimately upheld by His sovereign hand, and that trials are not random occurrences, but things that an all-powerful, loving God can use for a greater purpose.

Friends, understanding God’s power is not just about observing it from afar, but experiencing it within. It assures us, as believers, that the same power that brought the world into existence is actively working within us to break destructive habits, provide spiritual strength, and equip us for a purposeful life.

May you know Jesus as Almighty and stand firm on His might!

Holding Fast to Hope,
Jen
